Responsibility, Fear, and Royals
AI is behind everything :)
Hi, reader, AI enthusiast! 😉
It’s time for another round! Welcome back to Max’s weekly 3-minute newsletter. Being under the impression of the recent Oscar nominations, I feel myself in quite a film-vibe mood 🍿
But even while watching my favourite movies, I did not forget about you and have prepared a new bunch of AI-world discoveries. Fingers crossed, they will brighten your day, so let’s dive right in without further ado! 🤞
Great Responsibility 👩⚖️
It’s official now – if one wants to generate a ‘funny’ offensive joke using AI, they’ll have to think twice: no more jokes with no consequences. The European Parliament 🇪🇺 has approved a landmark AI law regulating artificial intelligence systems, including models like OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Since 2021, the EU has sought to balance ⚖️ the rapid development of AI with ensuring citizen protection and fostering innovation. The law garnered significant support in the Parliament, with 523 lawmakers voting in favour. It takes a risk-based approach, imposing stricter requirements on higher-risk AI systems and outright bans on those deemed most threatening. Companies will need to conduct risk assessments and ensure compliance before deploying AI products, with quite expensive fines ranging from €7.5 million to €35 million for violations 😬
The legislation also prohibits certain uses of AI, such as predictive policing and biometric profiling, while imposing restrictions on real-time facial recognition 🙋♂️ in public spaces. Despite intense lobbying efforts from various stakeholders, including tech giants, the EU has stood firm in crafting what is hailed as a balanced, risk-based and future-proof regulation.
The law is expected to come into force in the coming years, so I’d recommend looking through it before it comes to force. Remember, Peter Parker, with great power comes great responsibility 🕸️
Primal Fear 😰
New technologies obviously open a whole range of opportunities: marketers use artificial intelligence to analyse data, extract important insights and receive up-to-date information. Marketers also benefit from artificial intelligence to create campaigns, segment their audience, curate personalised content, and analyse performance. And yet…
According to the recent Forbes Research 📊, marketers are hesitant to embrace AI due to concerns that it might usurp their roles, with 64% expressing this fear. Another worry is the perceived loss of control over AI's automated decisions, leading to potential difficulties explaining outcomes to higher-ups. Additionally, there is apprehension about the transparency of AI-generated information, raising doubts about its accuracy and origins.
However, once again, according to Forbes…😅
Rather than shunning AI, marketers should…duh duh dun! - engage with AI providers, pose critical questions, and carefully assess tools for transparency and accountability before adoption. So what do we think: should we let AI be the trusty sidekick, amplifying human ingenuity and staying in line under the watchful eye of marketers within agreed-upon boundaries? 🤷 Feels like we should welcome a savvy sidekick into the marketing squad.
Royal Photoshop 💂♂️
"Quod licet Iovi, non licet bovi" is a Latin phrase meaning "What is permissible for Jupiter, is not permissible for oxen" 🐂 Each of us has utilised Photoshop or AI tools to enhance our photographs slightly, making them a touch nicer, sweeter or more suitable. However, you and I do not attract as much attention as the Royal 👑 Family.
The unveiling of the first official photograph of Catherine, the Princess of Wales, since her recent abdominal surgery sparked controversy due to apparent alterations. The image 👩👧👦 depicting Kate posing with her three children was credited to Prince William and shared on the royal couple's social media platforms. Nevertheless, major news agencies such as The Associated Press and Reuters withdrew the photograph, pointing out inconsistencies in details such as hand positioning and suggesting manipulation.
In her apology on social media, the Princess acknowledged experimenting with editing and expressed regret for any confusion. Despite demands for the unaltered version to be released, Kensington Palace declined ✋, stating they would not disclose the original photograph. This incident occurs amid ongoing speculation about Kate's health following her recent surgery, with the palace emphasising her desire for privacy concerning medical matters 💔
That wraps it up for now. Thank you for subscribing and supporting this initiative! I don’t want to sound cheesy, but that’s really important to me 🥹
See you next week, and stay curious! 🚀

P.S. This week has been tough for my homeland, Ukraine. russians shelled heavily and killed a lot of civilians. That’s a shame we have a war in the 3rd millennium. Please do not stay aside. Help! Act! Please 🙏
